Renovation check list for the Homeowner

So you have finally decided that your old bathroom needs a makeover, or your kitchen cupboards are giving you 1970’s throw backs.

We have created a must have check list to make any renovation a breeze.
We all know the hardest decision, or should I say the most IMPORTANT decision about a smooth renovation is choosing who will be doing it for you, who is managing, who will be putting their name on your amazing renovation.

1 Choosing an experienced builder
Choosing an experienced builder is very important Because you don’t want to be stuck with something that you are not happy with, or feel that awkwardness of telling them your not happy with certain things.

You want to choose a builder that has experienced nearly every problem and solved them without seeing them at hand over.

EVERY hidden detail from demolition, framework, light /power positions, plumbing points, water proofing to plaster is very important and just as important as the finishing touches that are visible every day

2. PREPARE Before getting a quote
Before getting a quote the most important things to know or have ready:

  • The Quality of your renovation ( for an investment medium to low, your own home to match existing home, high end, or medium)
  • What you want to achieve (that is different to what you already have) for e.g. More space, larger shower, remove the bath tub, more storage his and hers basins or keep same layout but just refresh ect.
  • A collection of screen shots or saved images for inspiration that you would like to achieve including vanities/shaving cabinets/ bath tubs / mirrors/ over all look/ fixtures etc.
  • Position/ layout of your new bathroom/ room : Toilet/shower/shaving cabinet/mirrors/towel rails neiche
  • Do you want a walk in shower? Sometimes this option is not possible for an e.g. when the bathroom is on the upper floor and is on a slab and waste needs to be checked into the slab, this
may impact the concrete’s integrity / strength. This option can be assessed by the builder This
    option is also more expensive
  • Type of fixtures your after so the builder can get an idea of the level of

3. A rough Floor plan
A builder can walk into a space and already see a finished result and may have suggestions for you to take advantage of the space you have.

but to get a good understanding for your self you can get a measuring tape and some masking tape, and measure on the floor and walls roughly where you would like your shower to be.

4. Get 3 quotes

RENOVATIONS ARE COMPLICATED so be prepared to get 3 quotes from 3 different builders

A renovation is very detailed and requires many tradesmen and women to come through the site, Here is a list of the minimum amount of different trades that will need to attend your renovation.

  • Demolition crew

  • Carpenter

  • Electrician (twice)

  • plumber (twice)
  • Plasterer
